Plovdiv is top of the list of Bulgarian towns in the number of road accidents with casualties per capita of the population, Smolyan is bottom of the list, indicates an analysis for 2016 by the Union of Bulgarian Motorists.
1,049 major traffic accidents resulting in 73 deaths were registered in Plovdiv last year. In Sofia there is a drop in the number of road accidents and traffic-related deaths – in 2015 63 people lost their lives in road accidents, in 2016 their number was 42. Sofia and Silistra are the only towns where not a single pedestrian has been killed.
