On the day of the last sitting of Bulgaria’s caretaker cabinet the printed media accentuate on the assessments of Premier Gerdzhikov and the caretaker ministers about their short mandate. Ognyan Gerdzhikov pointed out that unemployment in Bulgaria fell during his term and that the number of criminal cases has dwindled, Sega daily informs on Wednesday. The newspaper added that the caretaker cabinet gave itself an excellent mark in all possible spheres. Dnevnik daily accentuates that the country’s caretaker cabinet reported that an extra EUR 120 million was collected from taxes as compared to last year and that customs revenues increased with EUR 192 million. Moreover, the state managed to collect more money from concession fees in the economy and power engineering sectors. Standard daily frontpages a headline: Bulgaria’s caretaker cabinet-few benefits and blunders. The newspaper publishes on Wednesday an interview with political expert Zhivko Georgiev. Mr Georgiev commented that there were few caretaker cabinets in Bulgaria, but most of them functioned in the recent years and were mainly of a transitory nature, whereas the caretaker cabinets headed by Stefan Sofiyanski and Reneta Indzhova gave some fresh starts in the 90’s. The current caretaker cabinet ensured a smooth transition between the two regular governments. It organized normal elections and will not be remembered with any political scandals. Gerdzhikov’s cabinet functioned normally. It did not do anything exceptional and memorable. However, it did not make any blunders to the detriment of the Bulgarian society either. Political expert Georgiev does not expect any significant surprises from the forthcoming Borissov 3 cabinet. However, the new cabinet may function slightly better than the previous government headed by Boyko Borissov, especially if the United Patriots coalition stick to their engagements to control the ministries headed by their coalition partner better, political expert Zhivko Geogriev adds.
