The 20th edition of the ppIANISSIMO International Festival of Contemporary Piano Music, organized by the foundation of the same name, starts as of March 24. Its founder is Prof. Stela Dimitrova-Maistorova, who was the event’s artistic director till last year, when Prof. Borislava Taneva and Ilia Gramatikov took over. The program of the forthcoming edition is scheduled to become a real fest which will gather proselytes from different countries who are representatives of various cultures. Traditionally the BNR is the co-organizer of the event and the concerts take place at Studio 1 of the Bulgarian National Radio.

Current artistic director of the festival Ilia Gramatikov gives us details on the program:

“We decided to pick up the best performers that had participated over the years. The popularization of modern music has always been one of the pillars of the event. This is one of our causes – to present contemporary works at a really high level, granted by big names while the access to the concerts is free. The timeframe of the festival is something new – three weeks. We also have an accompanying program of master classes at the Pancho Vladigerov National Music School, alongside three concerts and a master class at the Dobrin Petkov National School for Music and Dance Art. What is most important – we will end up with a concert, where Stela Dimitrova herself will mark her 70th anniversary. Her students with successful careers here and abroad will be the guests – the lady has established this festival, she has had a huge repertoire with dozens of world premieres. She is also a dedicated pedagogue who has created her own school. Our cause has many aspects, but the main one is to give high quality to music as an opposition to these commercial times that we live in.”

The jazz concert of Anthony Donchev /piano/, Rosen Zahariev /trumpet/ and Pavel Terzyiski /vocal/ is scheduled for April 2. This is the line of improvisation within the festival. On March 31 we will listen to Maria Martinova /piano/ and Cyril Garak /violin/ with a program of works by Lyubomir Denev, Miroslav Danev, Gustavo Beytelmann and others.

A series of national and international institutions support the ppIANISSIMO cause – the ministry of culture, the Sofia Municipality, several countries’ embassies, the Hungarian Cultural Institute etc., Ilia Gramatikov says and adds:

“We will unveil the festival with selected performers from last year’s edition. Anna Christenson /piano/ and Annastina Malam /mezzosoprano/ have prepared an interesting conceptual program, presenting Swedish composers. They will also perform three songs of Borislava Taneva (world premiere). The concert of really talented in interpretations Gabor Chalog from Hungary will be on March 25 and he will present 20th century’s classics from his country. The man participated in ppIANISSIMO 2013. He will also have a master class at the music academy in Sofia. The works he will present have been composed for the 20th anniversary exclusively. I would also like to highlight the concert of Magdalena Lisa on April 1 – she will perform this colorful panorama of contemporary Polish music over the past few decades. This concert is supported by the Polish Cultural Institute. Dutch star Ralph van Raat will attend the third week of the event. Ambassador of Holland to Bulgaria will be the patron of the concert. Mr. Van Raat will be accompanied by Kamelia Miladinova who has been living and working in Holland for years. The two will present piano plays with interesting choreography. The marvelous ladies of the Absolut Trio from Switzerland have also prepared works which are different in their character and seizing a broad range of genres and styles from the 20th and 21st centuries."
