Fathers deprived of parental rights demand introduction of shared parenting

Fathers deprived of parental rights came out in protest in front of the central courthouse in Sofia to demand that a system of shared parenting be put in place. Draft amendments to the Family Code have been submitted that would introduce texts on shared parenting, but their discussion by the National Assembly has been postponed.

The Supreme Court of Cassation is considering an interpretative decision on whether the current text of the law allows for shared parenting. In some law courts, such a decision is admissible if there is agreement between the two parents. The protestors are demanding that after divorce, the child spend an equal amount of time with either parent.
