In 2016, revenues from tourism have marked a record high - over 2.8 billion euro until October, or 14.7% more than the same period of 2015. This was announced by outgoing Minister of Tourism Nikolina Angelkova at the opening of the Congress on World Civilizations and Modern Tourism, held in Sofia.

She repeated the forecast that the total annual number of foreign tourists to Bulgaria would exceed 8 million and this will be the first time when the annual number of tourists exceeds that of the country’s population. According to Angelkova Bulgaria is in the top three chart when wealth of artifacts in Europe is concerned because there are over 40,000 artifacts found on Bulgarian territory. "There is a lot that can impress our guests and tourists," Angelkova told participants in the forum, that discusses intersections between culture, history and tourism. It involves delegations from 40 countries.
