Today, November 6, Bulgaria holds Presidential elections and a national referendum. 6,834,278 Bulgarians with voting rights will choose between 21 candidates for President and Vice-President, nominated by initiative committees, political parties and coalitions. Should no candidate in the Presidential elections win 50%+1 of the votes at the first round, fun-off elections will be held on November 13. The two candidates who score highest results at the first round will run for President at the run-off voting. Voters can answer three questions at the national referendum: whether they agree with the introduction of majoritarian system to elect MPs, with the introduction of compulsory voting (although Bulgaria’s Parliament has already legislated this), with the reduction of the state subsidy for political parties to 1 Lev (50 Eurocents) per valid vote in the most recent Parliamentary elections. The Presidential elections and national feferendum in Bulgaria are being observed by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC), the Central Election Commissions of Latvia and Kosovo and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). Five sociological agencies are to make parallel vote tabulation. Election day in Bulgaria started at 8 am sharp and will end at 8 pm local time.
