In 2020 one quarter of the labour market in Bulgaria will consist of people of Roma origin. That was how Minster of Education Meglena Kuneva explained, in a televised interview, the idea of giving scholarships amounting to 30 euro, after selection, to Roma children who have made it to the 9th grade. 500,000 euro has been set aside for these scholarships, with around 60 percent coming from an international Roma fund.

“Children from Roma families have more problems to overcome to be able to stay in school,” Kuneva said. She added that more than 2,000 children drop out of school every year, most of them of Roma origin.
