One of the big music events this week is a get-together of leading Bulgarian musicians. These are pianist Jivko Petrov and his trio JP3 lined up with Veselin Veselinov-Eko, double bass, Dimitar Semov, percussions, and composer and trombonist Georgi Kornazov. They already held a concert in Plovdiv at BEBOP Café on 15 September, and another one is due in Sofia on 17 September, at Studio 5 of the National Palace of Culture.
Last year Jivko Petrov released his album with classical music After 4 almost simultaneously with the one with the trio - Between the world. Veselin Veselinov-Eko has contributed to it as an author.
Georgi Kornazov is a cosmopolitan musician who lives and works in Paris but has often returned to Bulgaria to team up with leading Bulgarian jazzmen such as Antoni Donchev, Rosen Zahariev, Atanas Popov and George Donchev, and now with JP3. A trombonist with an international career he leads a few formations. He creates music with plenty of love and dedication, and Paris is his inspiration. He released albums with original music, Sila (Strength) and Suznanie (Consciousness) in 2015. Kornazov has appeared on stage with a few Bulgarian jazzmen: Milcho Leviev, Antoni Donchev, Stoyan Yankulov, Theodosii Spassov and Hristo Yotzov. The foreign press has appreciated his work. Here is a quote from a review by Yves Dorisson in CULTUREJAZZ: “Georgi Kornazov is a universe between Bulgaria and Western jazz, offering a masterly mix of incredible melodies treated through the prism of the present day.”
Here is more from Jivko Petrov about the new joint project of the trio with Georgi Kornazov:
„The idea for this project has come from Georgi Kornazov. He wrote five pieces for the two concerts. We present original music with works of the trio and compositions by Georgi Kornazov, especially written and adapted for trio and trombone. He has written beautiful things. Rather, it is chamber music. Of course, there is a French streak, as well as pop, funk and jazz, but you can also find plenty of swing. The music that Georgi Kornazov delivered is more aligned with JP3. Concerts feature a piece called "Berlin 1944". So it will be the title of the new album of the trio, the fourth in a row. Currently we are in the process of recording the album. We have drawn inspiration from events that have happened recently.”
