EU urges Turkey to show restraint and to respect the rule of law

An EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, at which Bulgaria was represented by Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov categorically condemned the attempted coup in Turkey, but urged Ankara to show restraint and to respect human rights. 
The EU calls for the full observance of Turkey's constitutional order and stresses the importance of the rule of law prevailing. The EU underlines the need to respect democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms and the right of everyone to a fair trial in full compliance with the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, including Protocol 13 on the abolition of the death penalty.
Meanwhile the Turkish government suspended the annual leave of more than 3 million civil servants until further notice and has ordered those already on leave to return to their posts as soon as possible.
