The European Union is a unique peace project, the most successful process of regional integration and the biggest area of human rights and freedoms worldwide, Bulgaria’s President Rossen Plevneliev said at a meeting with Bulgarian students and pupils on occasion of Europe Day marked on May 9. The European Union today is the biggest world economy and the best union established after centuries of bloodshed and conflicts, President Plevneliev contends. In his words, the fact that the EU was founded as a project beyond the boundaries of the national egoism makes that project able to oppose successfully to possible conflicts. The desire for peace in Europe helped the EU countries overcome an unprecedented number of crises in 2015 such as the Ukrainian crisis, the crisis in the relations with Russia, the Greek crisis, the increased nationalistic wave, the fight against terrorism and against youth unemployment, Bulgaria’s head of state Rossen Plevneliev further pointed out.
