Orthodox Bulgaria commemorates crucifixion of Christ

On the 5th day of the Holy Week, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is the day of Jesus Christ’s greatest suffering and on Friday morning special services take place in churches across Bulgaria. The Holy Shroud is exposed to laymen as a symbol of the divine presence on earth. The shroud is also a symbol of the tomb where Christ was placed and Christians pass under it to show they are part of God’s suffering. Orthodox Christians observe strict fasting on Good Friday, thus showing their compassion and getting ready for the brightest Christian holiday that is to come on Sunday - the Resurrection of Christ.
