Recently Bulgaria’s capital Sofia hosted the international conference Gas Geopolitics in Southeastern Europe, organized by the Bulgarian Geopolitical Society. The main accent fell on topics regarding the main problems, the future strategies and approach in the sector and the main players in the gas infrastructure field. Sergio Matalucci who is a Key Gas analyst at the Natural Gas Europe commented what strategy Bulgaria should use with regard to the current situation in the gas transferring and supply field:
The Turkish perspective regarding the gas infrastructure was also discussed during the international conference. Dr Volkan Ozdemir, Chairman of the Institute for Energy Markets and Policies in Turkey said that Turkey should balance between the East and the West in that field. That country should also maintain good relations with Russia and Europe under certain conditions. Dr Volkan Ozdemir pointed out that currently his country can speak about Russian gas corridor through Turkey, rather than a gas hub on its territory.
Doctor Frederic William Engdahl who is a US geopolitical analyst and strategic risks consultant summarized the situation in Europe and outlined the possible consequences for Bulgaria.
