Sailboats cruising near the Bulgarian Black Sea coast will attract attention in the period August 14-16 when the 15th edition of the Cor Caroli Regatta will take place. It will include about 35-40 boats sailing not only under Bulgarian, but also under Ukrainian, British, and German flags. Last year's winner of the "Golden Globe" Award Georgi Mihov is also expected to participate. Toma Tomov - chairman of the "Cor Caroli Foundation", which is the organizer of the event in partnership with the Bulgarian Sailing Federation, the Varna Municipality and the "Captain Georgi Georgiev - Port Varna" Yacht Club, told us more:

"The first race from Kavarna to Sveti Vlas starts on August 14, at 11 am. At 9 am on Saturday the race from Sveti Vlas to Balchik starts and we expect that crews will arrive by 7 pm. This is the longest race. The shortest race will take place on August 16th - 18 miles from Balchik to Varna. The entire route of the regatta is more than 80 miles long. The last race is the shortest, but usually the fastest and most challenging of all. The winner is usually decided in the last race so it will be very interesting. The final will be in Varna, where people could enjoy the view of 35-40 sailboats.”

There will also be a number of additional events for participants including a test drive of the latest Audi models.

What does the name of the regatta mean?

“The name means a lot not only for sailors but also for all Bulgarians,” says Toma Tomov, president of the Cor Caroli Foundation. “This was the name of the sailing boat of Captain Georgi Georgiev who in the period 1976-1977 sailed around the globe. The regatta is named in his honour and it aims at promoting sailing among young people,” he adds.

(Cor Caroli is also the name of the brightest star in the northern constellation Canes Venatici)
