In memoriam - Georgi Badev

Prominent Bulgarian violinist Georgi Badev has passed away. He was an artist of high rank, a musician with a huge contribution to Bulgarian and world culture. And last but not least - a very modest man.

Georgi Badev was born in Vidin where he began his musical education. His talent was immediately noticed. Only 11-year-old he was admitted to the School for Gifted Children in Sofia where he studied with Prof. Vladimir Avramov. He was also his professor at the National Academy of Music (then Bulgarian State Conservatory) which he graduated in 1961. At the time, he was already winner of two major world competitions - in Moscow and Brussels. This was followed by first prize at Montreal, specializing with Isaac Stern in the US. Among his recordings there are works of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Stravinsky and others.

Every stage performance of his was a real celebration of music, with halls always full of his many admirers. Thanks to him many contemporary Bulgarian works have had their premieres. Impressive is also his pedagogical activity that began back in 1962. Teaching at the National Academy of Music in Sofia and the Musashino Music Academy in Tokyo, Georgi Badev was truly committed to working with the talented young violinists.
