Young Bulgarian rock band PSS is working with a great zeal and imagination, mixing artistic style and musicality. Since 2006 the band has been presenting its author’s pieces, the first ones launched in English. The PSS band defines its music style as an alternative rock mixed with blues and progressive motifs. Vasilen Valchanov-Leni - (guitar) and Sandra Petrova (front woman) talk to Radio Bulgaria.
“PSS is an abbreviation of the Pimp Switch Sequence. The phrase does not make any real sense. However, this name expresses our aspiration to turn mainstream music (pop, R&B, rap, electronic music) into the well-known rock. We believe that music has to be recorded without computer polishing. Sometimes computers change the voice of the vocals so much, that people find it hard to tell who is singing. This is not only our ambition. It represents the will of many people as well”, says Vasilen Valchanov.
“When something is played live, it is much better than its computer version, because it carries a lot of feeling”, Sandra adds.
Sandra is a graduated actress who performs on the stage of the Sofia Musical Theatre. She performed the part of Dorothy at her last performance -The Wizard of Oz. Leni is the guitarist of the PSS band. He graduated Music Business Management in London. Currently he writes music and he was last engaged with the Yan Bibiyan play at the Sofia Theatre. The band also consists of two engineers - Konstantin Savov (drums) and Svetoslav Dimitrov (bass guitar). One of them is a bio engineer and the other one - a telecommunications engineer. According to their colleagues, these men are obsessed by the music and view their work on stage as a great pleasure.
The music of the PSS band can be viewed at the first in Bulgaria online concert broadcasted live on You Tube in April, 2014.
“We made live streaming of a concert in Pacific Studio and it was quite interesting. It turned out that it is very hard to find a big music studio for us and the team which shoots our pieces. We also chose You Tube, because it guarantees that the picture and the sound go together without any delay.”
“The only problem in that case is that you do not see a real audience standing in front of you. There are cameras and illumination, but it feels a bit strange”, Leni further says. “I came up with the idea of this concert during a presentation of a music album of the American band Foo Fighters. These musicians played all their pieces in front of a camera in a music studio in one go. We liked that a lot. We had to make huge efforts during the organization process to make it look like it was a live concert. However, all our friends and acquaintance happened to like it a lot, especially the quality of the sound, for which we are very grateful to the sound-engineer. The comments of the audience were very positive during the concert and after that.”
PSS band records its music in a studio in Athens, Greece. The musicians confess that they do their best during recording, in order to sound the way they want. Their last two pieces are in Bulgarian and can be heard and downloaded for free from their website.
Their popular piece Dream is on air since January, 2014. They released the song Ne Go Misli (Do not think about it) several months later. The clouds over the Bulgarian Black Sea coast gave way to sunshine during the shooting of the video to fulfill the musicians’ dream to make a video with a fresh summer mood. The forthcoming appearances of the PSS band are in the resort of Sveti Vlas. They were also invited to perform in Sandanski (Southwestern Bulgaria) and the coastal town of Sozopol. The band promises to release a new song in September again in the PSS rock style.
