Bulgarian weightlifter Boyanka Kostova triumphed at the 53 kg category at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Bulgarian weightlifters won two gold medals at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. 2009 world youth champion and silver medallist among the women at the European tournament in Minsk in 2010, Boyanka Kostova, triumphed at the 53-kg category. Kostova won the title with a total result of 192 kilograms (85 kilograms in snatch and 107 kilograms in the jerk and clean event). Kuo Hsing Chun from Taiwan won the silver with 18 kilograms less than Kostova. Devi Safitri from Indonesia became third with 171 kilograms. Weightlifter Georgi Shikov won the second gold medal for Bulgaria, triumphing in the 85-kilogram category with a total result of 335 kilograms. Alexei Kosov from Russia became second with 334 kilograms, while Konstantin Reva from Ukraine was third with 320 kilograms.

The Bulgarian women’s national basketball team won 78:71 as a guest against Hungary in a qualification match for the European tournament. The victory preserves the Bulgarian chances for qualification. Bulgaria’s adopted American player Doneeka Hodges scored 24 points for the victory. In order to qualify for Euro 2011 Bulgaria must win the next two matches, while Montenegro must lose three games.

The Bulgarian men’s basketball team already has three victories in the qualifications for the European tournament in 2011. In the Universiada hall in Sofia the players of manager Rosen Barchovski won 103:64 against Portugal. Philip Videnov was one of the best players in the match and scored 15 points. The team has a total of 3 victories and two losses. On August 23rd the Bulgaria plays against Poland.

The Bulgarian national volleyball team won the silver medals at the international Hubert Wagner Memorial Tournament in Poland. The Bulgarians won 3:1 the matches against Poland and the Czech Republic, but lost 0:3 against Brazil. This week the Bulgarian players will continue their preparation for the World Championship in Italy, as they will play two friendly matches against the Italian team.

In the first playoff matches of the Europa League football tournament, CSKA Sofia and Levski Sofia have increased their chances for participation in the group stage. CSKA won 3-0 in Sofia against the Welsh team of The New Saints. As guests Levski reached a 0-0 draw against Swedish AIK. The Bulgarian football champions Litex, however, lost 0:2 against the Hungarian team of Debrecen, which has made the qualification task of the Bulgarian team very hard.

The football team of Chernomorets (Burgas) currently holds the first place after the 4th round of the Bulgarian football championship. The team has gathered a total of 10 points after a 1:0 victory against Vidima Rakovski. The team of Levski is second after winning 3:0 against Kaliakra. The teams of Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Litex Lovech reached a 2:2 draw and with a total of 8 points each, the teams hold the third and the fourth place in the current rankings. The team of CSKA Sofia managed to reach its first victory for the season after winning 1:0 against the team of Cherno More of the city of Varna.
