First shipment of US nuclear fuel arrives in Bulgaria

The first shipment of fresh nuclear fuel for the Kozloduy nuclear power plant has arrived at the port of Varna - West. The fuel, manufactured by the US company Westinghouse, was delivered by the Dutch-flagged ship Adamas, public broadcaster BNT reported.  It will be transported today in special containers by rail from the port terminal to the nuclear power plant. Access to the port has been restricted due to the dangerous nature of the cargo.

This is the first delivery of nuclear fuel under the ten-year contract between Kozloduy NPP and Westinghouse, announced in December 2022. The fuel is manufactured at the company's plant in Västerås, Sweden, and is intended to replace Russian fuel assemblies.

The Westinghouse fuel has not yet been approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
