EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson visited the border crossing at Sofia Airport. Bulgaria's caretaker Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov, showed Ms Johansson the new organisation of work after Bulgaria's accession to Schengen by air. The most important thing now, he said, was the compensatory police measures.

The Commissioner was shown the laboratories for the verification of documents in the second line and the electronic counters. She spoke to Frontex staff working at the checkpoint.

"We are celebrating the well-deserved and long-awaited accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen by air and by sea," Johansson said, expressing strong expectations for the full accession of the two countries.

She stressed that "Bulgaria and Romania are better prepared than other countries to implement the Schengen rules".
