Orthodox Christians honour the Holy Martyr Trifon

Today, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church pays hommageSaint Trifon.  The saint, who lived in the III century in the Asia Minor region of Phrygia, had the gift of healing. He was killed after refusing to return to paganism. 

Saint Trifon is considered the patron saint of vine-growers and winemakers, which is why he is often depicted on icons with cutting tools. 

Many prefer to celebrate the holiday on February 14 - in the old style. It is then that the farmers usually perform the ritual of cutting the vines, traditional for this holiday, and because of the ritual, the day is called Trofon Zarezan  (Trifon the Pruner) by the people.
